It’s peaker plant season in California. Heat waves are hitting the region, people are cranking up their ACs, and it is putting quite a load on the electrical grid.

Tesla has been using virtual power plants to aggregate its distributed energy systems, rooftop solar and Powerwall, to provide grid services and get more value for their customers.

A Tesla Model Y owner decided to build his own solar roof that can add over 20 miles of range to the electric SUV per day.

Tesla, like many other automakers, had previously explored adding solar to electric vehicles, but it has never pulled the trigger on the feature.

Other automakers offer it as an option, but the solar roof systems either only power auxiliary features and not the actual powertrain’s battery pack, or they only provide a few miles of range per day.

In 2017, CEO Elon Musk said that he pushed his Tesla engineers to look into integrating solar cells on Model 3, but they concluded that it wasn’t worth it at the time.

Tesla gained approval in Texas to debut two Virtual Power Plant pilot programs, as seen in a press release from the Public Utility Commission of Texas in recent weeks (via CNET). The approval lets Tesla Powerwall owners re-sell electricity generated by solar back to the Electric Reliability Council of Texas’s (ERCOT’s) electrical grid, creating what is effectively a giant distributed battery during times of peak use or emergency blackouts.

The news comes after a number of Texas residents were able to use their solar power and Powerwalls during the 2021 blizzard and accompanying power crisis to keep their homes running. In recent months, the state of Texas also registered Tesla Electric, which is the company’s own utility program, and customers of the offshoot are eligible to participate.

The drawings show 20 prefabricated Supercharger units, two trailer-friendly stalls, and four solar canopies.

Quartzsite, Arizona, with a population of 2,413, is the location of the huge Supercharging station. Incredibly, it is being built right across the road from a 36-stall Supercharger. So why is there now one Supercharger for every 20 people in Quartzsite? Interstate 10 runs through the small town, which is at the intersection of U.S. Route 95 and Arizona State Route 95 with I-10.

Tesla’s virtual power plant in California had its first emergency response event helping the grid by pooling power from Powerwall owners around the state. The event appears to have been a success as the distributed power plant looks like the future.

A virtual power plant (VPP) consists of distributed energy storage systems, like Tesla Powerwalls, used in concert to provide grid services and avoid the use of polluting and expensive peaker power plants.

Last year, Tesla launched a VPP pilot program in California, where Powerwall owners would join in voluntarily without compensation to let the VPP pull power from their battery packs when the grid needed it.

A team of scientists from Australia and the UK are embarking on an epic, 9400-mile Tesla road trip across some of the most remote regions of the world– and they’re doing it on 100% solar power.

The project is called “Charge Around Australia,” and the team hopes to get Aussies to think about new ways to prevent climate change while showing off the range and flexibility of the electric Tesla sedan. Out in Australia’s most remote regions– where the scorching temperatures, vast distances, and lack of water simply prohibit comfortable human habitation– the project’s roll-up solar panels will be put to the ultimate test.

PG&E announced that they have turned on their giant Tesla Megapack project with 730 MWh of capacity, and the electric grid company expects that it will “enhance the overall reliability of California’s ever-changing energy supply.”

We first learned of the project at PG&E’s Moss Landing substation when it submitted it to CPUC and the company was in talks with Tesla in 2017. It involves four separate energy storage projects, and two of them, including the one using Tesla Megapack, should become the world’s largest battery systems.
