The project in Kern County, CA, will combine 174MW of solar PV and a four-hour 88MW/352MWh BESS once operational in September 2023.

Wells Fargo, MUFG and Silicon Valley Bank have completed US$260 million of construction financing for Leeward Renewable Energy’s Chaparral Springs solar-plus-storage project in California.

The developer announced the securing of financing and tax equity commitments for Chaparral Springs yesterday (10 January). The project in Kern County, California, will combine 174MW of solar PV and a four-hour 88MW/352MWh battery energy storage system (BESS) once operational in September 2023.

The debt portion was issued under the Loan Market Authority’s Green Loan Principles. JP Morgan has provided US$29 million in tax equity investment and has committed to investing another US$114 million at commissioning.

Energy storage systems with a large amount of capacity are being developed to cover five sites in California and Hawaii, including one of the largest solar-plus-storage projects in the world.

The energy storage systems, which have a total capacity of 500 megawatts (MW) and 2-gigawatt hours (GWh), are being supplied by Wärtsilä to clean energy company Clearway Energy Group. The largest of the projects is located in San Bernardina, California, where 482 MW of solar and 275 MW and 1.1 GWh of energy storage are being installed.

That is the combination of two projects, called Daggett 2 and Daggett 3, and when combined will be one of the largest solar-plus-storage facilities, according to Wärtsilä. Both projects, which are being built on a retired coal and natural gas plant site, were planned in late 2021 with construction underway with completion set for 2023.

Wood Mackenzie Power & Renewables said in recent research that a total 3GW of utility-scale energy storage came online during 2021 in the US.

Lucas Moller, head of energy storage development at Recurrent Energy, discusses the rise of solar-plus-storage in the US: where the market has come from and where it’s heading.

Around 60% of new solar PV projects planned for deployment in US utility service areas over the next two years are hybrid resources paired with storage.

That’s equivalent to about 6GW and growing all the time. Although a clear majority of this new capacity will be clustered in the leading regional markets for solar, like California or Arizona, it’s increasingly becoming a national phenomenon.
