Solar, wind and battery storage accounted for nearly 95% of the capacity in transmission interconnection queues as of year-end 2023.

By year-end 2023, 1086 GW of solar projects awaited transmission interconnection, along with 503 GW of standalone storage, according to preliminary data from Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL). The amount of storage in hybrid projects, such as solar-plus-storage projects, awaiting interconnection at year-end was estimated at 525 GW by LBNL, based on imputed values for missing data when storage capacity for hybrid projects was not reported.

The data were reported in a staff report from the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC).

LBNL’s preliminary values for all but one of the resource types awaiting interconnection are presented in the table below from the FERC staff report. The exception is hybrid storage, which FERC staff shows as 299 GW in the table, not LBNL’s preliminary 525 GW, because FERC staff excluded hybrid storage projects for which capacity was not reported.

Renewable energy project developer Arevon Energy has secured $1.1 billion in aggregate financing commitments for its Eland 2 Solar + Storage Project in Kern County, California. The 374-MWDC solar project coupled with 150 MW/600 MWh of energy storage is under early-stage construction and is anticipated to come online in Q1 2025.

Wells Fargo provided a $431 million tax equity commitment. Arevon obtained $654 million of debt financing including a construction-to-term loan, a tax equity bridge loan and letter of credit facilities. Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce (CIBC) served as the Administrative Agent, Coordinating Lead Arranger, Green Loan Coordinator, and Bookrunner. Other Coordinating Lead Arrangers included BNP Paribas, CoBank, Commerzbank AG, Commonwealth Bank of Australia, and National Bank of Canada. J.P. Morgan served as Joint Lead Arranger, Collateral and Depositary Agent. Amis, Patel & Brewer, LLP represented Arevon as Sponsor Counsel; Milbank LLP served as Lender Counsel; and Sheppard Mullin served as Tax Equity Counsel.

Super Bowl LVIII was powered entirely by renewable power, with an EDF Renewables solar-plus-storage project in Nevada meeting the energy demands of the final game of the 2023 NFL season.

The game, which took place on 11 February, 2024, at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, Nevada, required 28MWh of electricity, according to climate tracker NZero, which was provided by EDF’s Arrow Canyon project. The solar-plus-storage project has a power generation capacity of 275MW, alongside a 5-hour battery energy storage (BESS) facility with a capacity of 75MW, which reached commercial operation last November.

  • The North Carolina Utilities Commission has given Duke Energy the green light to move ahead with its PowerPair residential solar-plus-storage incentive program, which will begin enrolling customers in May.
  • The program — capped at 30 MW each for Duke Energy Progress and Duke Energy Carolinas — will award incentives of up to $9,000 for 6,000 customers who agree to install rooftop solar and home batteries and to participate in one of two cohorts. One cohort will test Duke Energy’s time-of-use rates, while another cohort will receive a monthly incentive in exchange for allowing utility control of the installed batteries.

Enel North America completed a 2.7-MW solar and 1-MW/2-MWh energy storage system at Bayer’s vegetable research and development site in Woodland, California. Located in a region historically prone to rolling blackouts and grid disruptions, the solar + storage system will help increase Bayer’s energy and operational resilience, while also reducing its carbon footprint and demand on local energy infrastructure.

The solar system is expected to generate approximately 5,100 MWh of renewable energy each year, enough to cover about 70% of the Woodland site’s energy needs. Any excess electricity generated during the day can be stored in the accompanying energy storage system for later use, like during peak demand hours when utility rates are highest, or shared back onto the local electrical grid. Stored electricity from the battery can be used during times of peak demand to minimize the amount of power drawn from the grid when energy rates are highest.

Charitable foundations are using a variety of strategies to get solar panels for health centers, schools and other community buildings.

The rooftop solar industry is booming, but far too few lower-income Americans are benefiting as a result. It’s a ​modern version of redlining,” according to Joe Evans of the Kresge Foundation. Now an increasing number of charitable foundations are stepping up to redress that injustice, using a range of approaches to bring the benefits of solar to the communities that need it most.

Thanks to foundations, more than 300 solar panels were installed in the Hopi and Navajo Nations in Arizona, creating jobs and providing reliable electricity to health centers, schools and other community buildings. A former coal mining area in West Virginia became a hub of solar development, with a comprehensive solar job-training program. Dozens of Wisconsin nonprofits received free solar panels, accelerating their shift to clean energy and boosting enthusiasm for solar in their communities. And 24 U.S. health centers in areas at risk for natural disasters developed solar systems with battery backup to supply power when the grid goes down.

The Daggett Solar + Storage project in San Bernardino County features 482MW of solar power generation capacity with 280MW of energy storage.

A California-headquartered energy company announced the start of commercial operation of one of the nation’s largest solar-plus-storage hybrid power plants.

Officials with Clearway Energy Group, along with California Gov. Gavin Newsom, on Oct. 18 said the Daggett Solar + Storage project in San Bernardino County is now online. The installation features 482 MW of solar power generation capacity, along with 280 MW of energy storage. The Daggett facility is located adjacent to the decommissioned Coolwater Generating Station, a former 636-MW natural gas-fired plant in Daggett that was retired in 2015.

Recent studies have proposed using solar-plus-storage microgrids to minimize public safety concerns from power shutoffs (PSPS) during the wildfire season for communities located in wildland-urban interfaces, such as California and much of the US west coast.

A comprehensive assessment of microgrids had not been performed to evaluate the potential to enhance resilience for up to 46 million Americans living next to forests, or a wildland-urban interface, where wildfire risk is acute.

To address this research gap, a study by the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory looked at a novel modeling framework and assessed the potential of solar and batteries for districts where power can be turned off based on wildfire warnings.

California has had a solar PV mandate since 2019, and just passed another mandate phasing out gas-powered cars by 2035. Compared to most states, they’re taking the fast track to phasing out CO2.

Renewables developer Intersect Power has brought a 310MWp PV, 448MWh energy storage system project online in California.

The company announced the 22 December 2022 start of commercial operations for its Athos III solar project in Riverside County yesterday (11 January, 2023).

The solar PV can generate a maximum of 224MWac/310MWp of solar energy and the project features a 112MW/448MWh battery energy storage system (BESS), a four-hour unit.
