UK-based solar developer Lightsource bp said today it has brought online its 188-MW Honeysuckle solar project in St Joseph County, Indiana.

Lightsource bp has signed a power purchase agreement (PPA) with Google for the solar park’s electricity, following the tech group’s announcement of a USD-2-billion (EUR 1.8bn) data centre campus in Fort Wayne.

“We have an ambitious goal to operate every Google campus on clean electricity every hour of every day by 2030, which will include our Fort Wayne data center once it comes online,” said Amanda Peterson Corio, Google’s global head of data centre energy.

Tesco Supermarket will buy almost two-thirds of the energy generated by the new £450m Cleve Hill solar park in Kent

Tesco has struck a deal to buy enough solar power to run 144 of its large supermarkets, buying almost two-thirds of the entire electricity output from the Cleve Hill solar park in Kent.

The £450m solar park is being built on farmland near Faversham by Quinbrook Infrastructure Partners, a London-based firm that invests in renewable and low-carbon energy in the US, UK and Australia.

The site will provide Tesco with up to 10% of its UK electricity demand over 15 years. Tesco said the amount of clean energy generated would be enough to power 144 of its large stores for a year.

Chilean researchers from Universidad Mayor say that the 10.8 MW La Colonia photovoltaic plant provides a habitat for birds.

Researchers at the School of Environmental and Sustainability Engineering of Universidad Mayor in Chile have found that native birds use solar parks as a refuge.

The scientists conducted their research at the 10.8 MW La Colonia solar park in Buin, Chile. The project was built by Chilean developer IM2 Solar Chile and Enel Green Power, the renewable energy unit of Italian energy giant Enel. The research team observed the behavior of several local bird species for six months.

“It was possible to verify that the solar park presents favorable conditions for the development of this type of species,” the academics said. “The panels show positive impacts on the ecosystem, thanks to the shade they produce, the refuge effect they generate for the development of herbaceous species and the productive rest of the soil, the latter evidenced in different scientific studies.”

The Sapphire PV park is expected to generate 375,800 MWh of clean energy annually, equal to the consumption of over 58,000 local homes.

EDF Renewables North America, part of French electric utility group EDF SA (EPA:EDF), has clinched a power off-take deal for a 117-MW solar project in California with Southern California Public Power Authority (SCPPA).

The power purchase agreement (PPA) calls for the US utility to procure the power output and receive renewable attributes from the Sapphire solar project. The deal has a 20-year term, EDF Renewables said on Tuesday.

To be installed on private land in California’s Riverside County, the Sapphire photovoltaic (PV) park is expected to generate 375,800 MWh of clean energy annually, equal to the consumption of over 58,000 local homes. It will deliver electricity to SCPPA’s Participating Members, Anaheim, Pasadena and Vernon. Power generation is due to be launched by end-December 2026.
