US electricity generation is expected to increase by 3% – 121B kilowatthours – this year compared to 2023, largely driven by solar power

U.S. electricity generation is expected to increase by 3% – 121 billion kilowatthours (BkWh) – this year compared to 2023, largely driven by solar power, and natural gas to a lesser extent, according to Short-Term Energy Outlook analysis from the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA).

“Significant” capacity expansions are driving the increase in solar generation, EIA said, with solar accounting for 59% of U.S. generating capacity additions in the first half of 2024. The increase in solar capacity was also supported by the development of new battery storage capacity, EIA said.

Calpine’s billion-dollar, 680-megawatt project in Menifee will be one of the biggest batteries in the U.S. when it comes online this summer.

For a decade, twin smokestacks loomed against the bright blue skies of Menifee, in Southern California’s Inland Empire. But the old gas combustion plant came down, and on the flat industrial site it left behind an army of batteries is now being assembled.

When it comes online this summer, developer Calpine’s Nova power bank will store more electricity than all but one battery plant currently operating in the U.S. The billion-dollar project, with 680 megawatts and 2,720 megawatt-hours, will help California shift its nation-leading solar generation into the critical evening and nighttime hours, bolstering the grid against the heat waves that have pushed it to the brink multiple times in recent years.

The commercial market isn’t ignoring energy storage, but it will take the efforts of policymakers, contractors and manufacturers to push battery adoption further.

When compared to the utility-scale and residential markets, the installed capacity of energy storage in the community, commercial and industrial (CCI) market is woefully underdeveloped, especially judged against its potential.

According to Wood Mackenzie’s “US Energy Storage Monitor” report, the grid-scale segment deployed 6,848 MWh of storage in Q3 2023, the residential segment installed 381.4 MWh and the CCI market managed 92.9 MWh. That “last place” standing will continue for CCI, as the other two markets are predicted to outpace it beyond 2027.

Data from the California Energy Commission (CEC) highlight California’s continued progress toward building a more resilient grid, achieving 100% clean electricity and meeting the state’s carbon neutrality goals.

Analysis of the state’s Total System Electric Generation report shows how California’s power mix has changed over the last decade. Since 2012:

  • Solar generation increased nearly twentyfold from 2,609 gigawatt-hours (GWh) to 48,950 GWh.
  • Wind generation grew by 63%.
  • Natural gas generation decreased 20%.
  • Coal has been nearly phased out of the power mix.

The California Independent System Operator set a new solar peak generation record for the third month in a row, as solar output has reached the highest level on record so far this month.

The new record of 15.178 GW was reached at 12:11 pm PT June 2, surpassing the previous record from May 23 by 72 MW, according to the latest CAISO Key Statistics report published June 12.

The records come as no surprise since CAISO solar capacity continues to rise, even if the increase is slower than expected, Morris Greenberg, a senior manager with the low-carbon electricity team at S&P Global, said June 13.

Growing California power system reliability threats made vivid by early September Flex Alerts called by the state’s system operator could be relieved by a price signal based on real-time pricing, or RTP, linked to smart customer-owned resources through new enabling technologies, according to the California Public Utilities Commission Energy Division’s June 22 ”CalFUSE” proposal.

The new approach could transform California’s high penetrations of customer-owned distributed energy resources  into a response to electricity market supply and load fluctuations, commissioners agreed in a July 14 order opening a proceeding to investigate the proposal’s potential.
