Santa Clara County will soon have a large solar energy system in its own backyard.

VCI Energy, a newcomer to the renewable energy industry, will develop the first large-scale solar energy and storage infrastructure in the county.

Silicon Valley Clean Energy, a public agency that provides clean electricity to homes and businesses throughout Santa Clara County, will purchase the renewable energy generated from the new system – a decision the agency’s Board of Directors approved during its meeting in October.

Rep. Boylan drafted a bill that requires all new single-family homes in RI & new outdoor parking lots larger than 16,000sq ft to install solar

A freshman lawmaker in Rhode Island has opened a provocative discussion: why not mandate solar panels on most new construction?

Rep. Jennifer Boylan, a Democrat who has solar panels on her home in Barrington, said she sees every instance in which a new building goes up without solar panels as “a missed opportunity.”

So she drafted a bill that would require all new single-family dwellings in the state to have a solar energy system large enough to meet at least 80% of the dwelling’s estimated annual average electricity use. The mandate would also apply to multifamily dwellings and commercial buildings up to 10 stories high.

Over the weekend, Newsom signed Senate Bill 1340 into law, which extends the tax exclusion for installing a new active solar energy system.

A new California law extends the sunset on an existing property tax exclusion for newly constructed active solar energy systems by two years, a measure that Gov. Gavin Newsom acknowledged has a “direct impact” on property tax revenues for local governments.

Over the weekend, Newsom signed Senate Bill 1340 into law, which extends the tax exclusion for installing a new active solar energy system. Under current law, installing a solar energy system does not result in an “increase or decrease in the assessment of the existing property, unlike other physical additions,” according to a bill analysis.
