MA’ADEN, a Saudi Arabian mining company, and GlassPoint, a U.S.-based solar energy solutions provider, have inked an initial deal to build the world’s largest solar-powered steam plant at the former’s refinery.

To aid in the decarbonization of the energy-intensive, coal-dependent process of producing aluminum, which ends up in our cell phones, computers, automobiles, and other products.

The new facility will help the mining company reduce its carbon emissions by approximately 600,000 tons per year, according to Arab News.

NASA plans to reexamine the feasibility of space-based solar power, an approach that is finding new support based on lower launch costs, technological advances and interest in clean energy sources.

WASHINGTON — NASA is starting a study to reexamine the viability of space-based solar power, a long-touted solution to providing power from space that may be getting new interest thanks to technological advances and pushes for clean energy.

In a presentation at the National Space Society’s International Space Development Conference May 27, Nikolai Joseph of NASA’s Office of Technology, Policy and Strategy said the agency was beginning a short-term study evaluating the prospects of space-based solar power, or SBSP, the first by the agency in about two decades.

University of Illinois Chicago students recently built a solar charging station for one of the school’s vehicles used to deliver food and reduce food waste.

Students at University of Illinois Chicago (UIC) recently gained experience with solar technology and EVs by building a charging station for one of the school’s vehicles which is used to deliver food and reduce food waste. The little car even has a name: Gemma, but we’ll get to why that is in a minute.

“To charge Gemma off-grid, we implemented a 300-watt solar panel. The solar panel charges a battery that is used to charge Gemma at night,” Joe Downie, a team member, told UIC Today. “The charge station implements manual solar tracking, and it has 12 settings so that it is angled to be most efficient for each month.”

As demand for renewable energy grows globally, several emerging markets are positioning themselves as leaders in exporting solar power.

As demand for renewable energy grows globally, several emerging markets are positioning themselves as leaders in exporting solar power. Most notably, Indonesia appears to be leading the charge. In recent months five giant solar power-export projects have been proposed in the country.

One project, announced in mid-April, saw Singaporean renewable energy provider Quantum Power Asia and Berlin-based Ib Vogt agree to a $5bn deal to export solar power to Singapore.

The proposal involves constructing a 3.5-GW solar park and a 12-GWh battery storage facility across 4000 ha of land on Indonesia’s Riau Islands. The generated power would then be exported to Singapore via an undersea cable.

Hawaii leads the country with nearly 20 solar customers per 100 households, followed by California and Arizona.

Home solar power usage has boomed in the U.S. in the past decade, but most of that growth has come from just two states.

The number of homeowners and businesses that linked up solar panels to utility grids has grown more than tenfold since 2012, rising from nearly 234,000 customers to about 3.2 million this year. Arizona and California account for half of those customers, according to an analysis of data from the U.S. Energy Information Agency, or EIA.

When the numbers are adjusted for population, Hawaii leads the country with nearly 20 solar customers per 100 households, followed by California and Arizona.

The UK believes that beaming electricity from space using the sun could help the country meet its target of zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.

The United Kingdom is getting serious about beaming solar power from space and thinks it could have a demonstrator in orbit by 2035.

Over 50 British technology organizations, including heavyweights such as aerospace manufacturer Airbus, Cambridge University and satellite maker SSTL, have joined the U.K. Space Energy Initiative, which launched last year in a quest to explore options for developing a space-based solar power plant.

The initiative believes that beaming electricity from space using the sun could help the U.K. meet its target of zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050 more cost-effectively than many existing technologies. The requirement to stop carbon emissions entirely by mid-century is part of global efforts to halt progressing climate change outlined at the United Nations’ COP 26 summit that took place in Glasgow in November 2021.

Digital Realty unveiled two power purchase agreements (PPAs) for 158 MW of solar energy in California and Georgia.

US data centres outfit Digital Realty (NYSE:DLR) today unveiled two power purchase agreements (PPAs) for 158 MW of solar energy in California and Georgia as a step toward 100% renewable electricity.

One of the deals is a 12-year contract that will support a new 130-MW solar project in Kern County, California being developed by US renewables developer Terra-Gen as part of its Edwards Sanborn Solar Storage energy project. The solar-plus-storage facility is expected to be completed late this year.

California leads the nation with more than 1.3 million solar rooftops installed on homes, but the state also has potential for a lot more.

The state ranks second in the nation when measuring the percentage of solar panels on rooftops capable of installing photovoltaic systems.

Consumer comparison research firm InMyArea.com used data from Google’s Project Sunroof, which estimates the suitability of solar installations on the nation’s buildings, to calculate energy costs from the U.S. Energy Information Administration.

On a windy day last week, a Maine company made history when it launched a prototype of the first-ever completely solar-powered powerboat on a Waldo County lake.

“I’m pretty blown away by it,” Dan Miller, the owner of Belmont Boatworks, said Wednesday of the launch of Solar Sal 24 on Lake St. George in Liberty. “It was really fantastic. She did everything she was supposed to do, and did it perfectly.”

Solar Sal, which Miller describes as an open day boat, is different from other solar/plug-in hybrids that are currently on the market, including some pontoon boats. The only way to charge its batteries and the electric motor is with the solar panels on the boat’s canopy.
