A solar and battery project will grow next to a garden in National City

A community garden in National City is one of 16 organizations that will benefit by receiving a portion of $1.2 million from the annual Community Clean Energy Grant awards program.

The Olivewood Gardens and Learning Center will use $100,000 it received from San Diego Community Power and Calpine Energy Solutions to install solar panels and a battery energy storage system.

Jen Nation, executive director of the eight-acre greenspace and its nearby office that serves about 10,000 people annually, said the solar and storage project is expected to save the center about $400,000 in energy costs over the course of 20 years.

Three-decker, solar and battery powered yacht hits the water in Italy

Silent Yachts has launched the first three-decker redesign of its Silent 62 solar electric catamaran. The Silent 62 3-Deck features three separate solar module arrays totaling 17 kWp, an integrated energy storage system recently upgraded from 286 kWh to 350 kWh. Introduced in 2019, the Silent 60 series builds on the legacy of the Silent 64, which made headlines in 2018 as the first solar-powered yacht to successfully cross the Atlantic. The ship cruises at 6 to 8 knots and can reach peak speeds of 16 to 18 knots.

Owned by Austrian business leaders and based in Fano, Italy, Silent Yachts has recently expanded into a new production facility. This facility spans over 230,000 square feet and includes five buildings equipped for shipbuilding, two of which are topped with solar modules. The company celebrated the launch of its first boat from this new facility in February 2023.

Major solar-plus-storage project online at retired gas-fired power plant

A California-headquartered energy company announced the start of commercial operation of one of the nation’s largest solar-plus-storage hybrid power plants.

Officials with Clearway Energy Group, along with California Gov. Gavin Newsom, on Oct. 18 said the Daggett Solar + Storage project in San Bernardino County is now online. The installation features 482 MW of solar power generation capacity, along with 280 MW of energy storage. The Daggett facility is located adjacent to the decommissioned Coolwater Generating Station, a former 636-MW natural gas-fired plant in Daggett that was retired in 2015.
