New York City kicks off Climate Week 2024 with construction of a massive microgrid project at JFK Airport's New Terminal One.

New York City is beginning Climate Week 2024 with a bang, announcing the start of construction on a massive microgrid project at John F. Kennedy International Airport’s New Terminal One.

Energy as a Service (EaaS) provider AlphaStruxure will construct, operate, and maintain a 12-megawatt (MW) microgrid that will distribute energy from solar panels, fuel cells, and a battery energy storage system to power the terminal’s everyday operations, meeting about half its daily load. All of the power generated on-site will stay at the airport.

Four Northern California tribes are working together on a microgrid project to improve power reliability in their remote region.

The project will help the Yurok, Hoopa and Karuk Tribes avoid frequent power outages by generating their own renewable energy.

Heidi Moore-Guynup from the Blue Lake Rancheria Tribe, said these tribes live along one of Pacific Gas & Electric’s most unreliable power lines.

“They are without power often,” she said. “This could be because of a tree limb. This could be because of extreme heat. This could be because of planned or unplanned power outages. It could be because there’s an earthquake here on the coast.”

The Viejas Microgrid project will provide the Viejas Band with reliable utility-scale renewable energy generation and storage infrastructure.

The U.S. Dept. of Energy’s (DOE) Loan Programs Office (LPO) has announced a conditional commitment for an up to $72.8 million partial loan guarantee to finance the development of a solar and long-duration energy storage microgrid on the Tribal lands of the Viejas Band of the Kumeyaay Indians near Alpine, California.

This project is the first to be offered a conditional commitment through the Tribal Energy Financing Program, which was expanded and provided new loan authority the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA).
