EIA expects 62.8 GW to come online in 2024, led by solar, energy storage

The Energy Information Administration expects power plant developers and owners will add 62.8 GW this year in the United States, up 55% from 2023 when 40.4 GW came online, the agency said Monday.

Developers and power plant owners brought 20.2 GW online in the first six months this year, adding 3.6 GW, or 21%, more than in the same period last year, the EIA said. The agency expects another 42.6 GW will be added in the second half this year.

About 12 GW of utility-scale solar came online in the first half, accounting for 59% of all new capacity, according to the EIA. Texas and Florida made up 38% of U.S. solar additions, the agency said.

We expect solar electric generation will be the leading source of growth in the U.S. electric power sector. In our January Short-Term Energy Outlook (STEO), which contains new forecast data through December 2025, we forecast new capacity will boost the solar share of total generation to 5.6% in 2024 and 7.0% in 2025, up from 4.0% in 2023.

The STEO includes two Between the Lines articles that discuss how our forecast for Brent crude oil prices performed in 2023 and a closer look at our Brent price forecast for 2024 and 2025. We expect U.S. crude oil and natural gas production growth to slow, but both continue to reach new records.

US solar electricity generation to exceed hydroelectricity in 2024, EIA predicts

The U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) is forecasting that in 2024, electricity from solar energy will exceed the amount of energy coming from hydropower sources by about 14%. The prediction has been published in EIA’s Short-Term Energy Outlook report.

EIA attributes this prediction to continuing growth around the U.S. in both utility-scale and small-scale solar facilities. Earlier this year, EIA said it expected about 54% of electricity-generating capacity to come from solar energy in 2023 as developers had plans to add a total of 54.5 gigawatts of utility-scale electric-generating capacity to the U.S. power grid.

US solar is booming – here’s the newly released data

US solar is growing at a breakneck speed, and it hit several big milestones in July, according to newly released government data.

In its latest monthly “Energy Infrastructure Update” report (with data through July 31, 2023) reviewed by the SUN DAY Campaign, the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) says solar provided 1,824 megawatts (MW) of new US generation capacity, or more than 67.2% of the total added in July 2023. The balance (892 MW) was provided by natural gas. This brought solar’s share of total available installed generating capacity in the US up to 7.12%.
