Valley Children’s Hospital in Madera, California is retiring its diesel generators in favour of a solar microgrid with long-duration energy storage, in a bid to clean up its electricity supply while ensuring a reliable, uninterrupted flow of power.

The Children’s Hospital Resilient Grid with Energy Storage (CHARGES) project will feature a 34.4-megawatt-hour, long-duration storage system using zinc-bromine flow batteries supplied by Brisbane, Australia-based Redflow Ltd., Power Engineering reports. “The microgrid system is designed to safeguard critical hospital operations during utility outages, ensuring at least 18 hours of continued functionality following earthquakes or other natural disasters.”

Hormel Foods Corporation celebrated the completion of an 8-acre solar field during a ribbon-cutting event at its Jennie-O plant location.

The project is projected to generate 3.2 million kilowatt hours (kWh) per year between the community solar and onsite solar projects. The onsite solar portion of the project will supply approximately 10% of the plant’s annual electricity, while the community solar portion of the project will provide Jennie-O team members, community members and businesses the opportunity to support green power and receive discounts on their energy bills.

“We are inspired to do our part to make the world a better place with the completion of this project,” said Tom Raymond, director of environmental sustainability at Hormel Foods. “We know the importance of advancing renewable energy initiatives and this project demonstrates our commitment to environmental stewardship, including how we source the energy we need.”

The US Department of Transportation has given a grant of nearly $202m to California’s ongoing solar-powered high-speed rail project.

The US Department of Transportation has given a grant of nearly $202m to California’s ongoing solar-powered high-speed rail project.

The money will fund the construction of six grade separations in the city of Shafter, Kern County. They will vertically separate roads from current freight railways and future high-speed railways where the roads and railways intersect to avoid accidents and smooth the flow of road and rail traffic.

The grant was made through the federal 2022 Consolidated Rail Infrastructure and Safety Improvements programme.

The California High-Speed Rail Authority, the state-mandated body delivering the scheme, said it was the largest award it has received since the passage of the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act in November 2021.

The US Bureau of Land Management (BLM) has started accepting public comments related to the environmental assessment of an up to 400-MW solar project to be partly located on public lands in California.
Feedback for the Easley Solar scheme will be gathered for 30 days, until October 15, BLM said on Friday.
The project was put forward by IP Easley, a subsidiary of Intersect Power LLC, which intends to build, operate and maintain a photovoltaic (PV) farm in Riverside County. The complex will cover around 2,700 acres (1,093 ha) of BLM-administered public lands and 990 acres of private lands north of Desert Centre. The area will be developed in line with the Desert Renewable Energy Conservation Plan, which covers 10.8 million acres of public lands in the desert regions of seven California counties and aims to streamline renewable energy development while preserving desert ecosystems.

The IRA's Solar for All program aims to provide distributed solar energy to disadvantaged, low-income and tribal communities in the US.

In rural communities in California, access to renewable energy options such as solar and wind power is often limited. While larger cities are focusing on large-scale renewable energy projects, rural areas have few opportunities and resources to develop their own clean energy solutions. This makes them dependent on energy sources based on fossil fuels, whose reliability and safety are questionable.

However, there is hope on the horizon. The Inflation Reduction Act offers rural communities the opportunity to access financing for renewable energy projects through the Solar for All program. This program, administered by the EPA, aims to provide distributed solar energy to disadvantaged, low-income and tribal communities in the United States. With a budget of $7 billion, Solar for All focuses on community and rooftop solar projects that benefit local residents.

IKEA today announced that it’s adding solar car parks, more solar on store rooftops, and battery energy storage systems to seven of its US stores.

IKEA has been installing solar at its US stores for more than a decade. Its Paramus, New Jersey, store is the first of seven units included in this new solar push, and it appears to have functioned as a pilot, as IKEA today said that its solar installation was completed in July of this year. Paramus (pictured above) boasts IKEA’s first-ever long-span carpark system that maximizes the number of solar panels and covers the entire parking deck roof.

The remaining six units that are in the project are in Brooklyn; Covina, CA; New Haven, CT; Stoughton, MA; Tempe, AZ, and the IKEA fulfillment facility in Tejon, CA.

The largest solar farm in Europe to be built on a closed landfill site has begun generating renewable electricity from a former rubbish dump in Essex.

The Ockendon solar farm, the third largest in the UK, includes more than 100,000 solar modules covering 70 hectares (173 acres) of land.

Its owner, the waste company Veolia, expects the solar array to generate enough clean electricity to power the equivalent of 15,000 homes.

The company said it hoped to give “new life” to the former rubbish dump, which would otherwise have had limited options for redevelopment.

On August 21, the City of Santa Barbara began construction on a 425 kilowatt (kW) solar photovoltaic system and battery energy storage system (BESS) at the Granada Garage. This project will generate, store, and supply electricity to the Granada Garage, Granada Offices, and the 911 Call Center while also reducing electricity costs at the Central Library across the street.

The project will produce approximately 700,000 kWh per year of clean renewable electricity, equivalent to powering over 150 Santa Barbara homes. In addition to increasing local renewable electricity capacity, project benefits include improved regional air quality and energy reliability, and supporting the local green energy industry.

The completion of the nearly 100-acre project, developed by Arizona-based Bright Canyon Energy,  was celebrated at the 1,300-acre Army base on Friday, Aug. 10. BCE, which partnered with local power utility companies, paid for the installation of the solar panels and will get a percentage of the revenue from selling the renewable energy to local communities.

The Port of San Diego was part of a groundbreaking this week for an electric shoreside charging station to support the first all-electric tug in the U.S.

Crowley Maritime Corporation, a U.S. maritime, energy and logistics company, will operate “eWolf,” an electric tug that when it is completed will be located at the port’s Tenth Avenue Marine Terminal.

The charging station is a micro-grid charging facility that will allow vessels to recharge quickly while reducing peak loads on the community energy grid. It is equipped with two containerized energy storage systems provided by Corvus Energy, a leading supplier of reliable energy solutions in the maritime sector.
