California’s repeated brushes with blackouts proved too much for Taylor Farms.

The produce supplier, based in the farm country John Steinbeck made famous, can’t afford to lose refrigeration at its facilities where lettuce and vegetables are trimmed, mixed into salads and packaged for sale.  So working with Bloom Energy Corp., Taylor Farms is installing a microgrid at its 450,000 square-foot facility near San Juan Bautista — its largest — powered by fuel cells, solar panels and batteries in an effort to end the plant’s reliance on California’s strained power grid.

Amazon announces 420 MW of utility-scale solar projects in India

U.S. e-commerce group Amazon has announced its first utility-scale renewable energy projects in India – three solar farms located in Rajasthan. These include a 210 MW project to be developed by Indian developer ReNew Power, a 100 MW project to be built by Amp Energy India, and a 110 MW project to be developed by Brookfield Renewable. 

“Combined, these solar farms can generate 1,076,000 MWh of renewable energy per year, enough to power over 360,000 average-sized households in New Delhi annually,” stated the company.

Amazon will also deploy 23 rooftop solar arrays totaling 4.09 MW across 14 cities in India. This brings the total number of its solar rooftop projects in India to 41, with a combined capacity of 19.7 MW.

Solar garden provides renewable energy for communities

A project launched this month as Australia’s “first large-scale solar garden” could be one of many to pop up around the country in the next five years.

A five-hectare paddock on a farm in Grong Grong, an hour west of Wagga Wagga, has been earmarked as the site for a 1.5MW “solar garden” that includes “plots” that can be purchased by residents throughout New South Wales.

It’s a concept similar to community gardening, where people who don’t have a back yard can still garden by buying or renting a plot in a communal area.

The project, which will produce enough energy to power nearly approximately 145,500 homes, represents another major step forward in the Biden-Harris administration’s efforts to lower costs for families and create a clean energy, carbon-free future.

“Bringing another solar project to full operation on our public lands will accelerate our nation’s transition to a clean energy economy by unlocking renewable resources, creating jobs, lowering costs, and boosting local economies,” said Secretary Deb Haaland. “The Interior Department will continue to advance the sustainable development of clean energy in order to help meet the Biden-Harris administration’s goal of 100 percent carbon-free electricity by 2035.”

Debt-financed battery project serving California non-profit energy supplier

Luna Battery Storage, a 100MW/400MWh battery energy storage system (BESS) project in California which was the subject of a “landmark” debt finance deal, is now online and serving community choice aggregator Clean Power Alliance (CPA).

CPA has contracted for 100MW of flexible energy storage capacity for a 15-year term with AES Corporation, which owns the project and developed it through subsidiary sPower – which was later merged into the parent company, becoming AES Clean Energy.

CPA said last week that it is now receiving the clean energy capacity from the system in the City of Lancaster, Los Angeles County.

$1.23 million California grant used to install solar + storage in low-income community

Panel-level battery maker Yotta Energy has been award a $1.23 million grant from the California Energy Commission (CEC) to develop a solar and storage system to address energy inequality in lower-income areas. The project will include battery backup for a 11-story multifamily housing complex located in Santa Ana, California. In addition to economic benefits, the project will also examine reduction in greenhouse gas emissions, improvements to the surrounding environment, and implications to the existing utility grid by adding solar + storage in a low-income community.

“Our state has long been dedicated to introducing and integrating renewable energy, but as lower-income areas lagged behind in adoption due to a lack of resources, these communities have experienced elevated air pollution levels,” said CEC Chair David Hochschild “We look forward to working with Yotta Energy on this project to demonstrate the viability of these installations and how we can replicate similar types across the state.”

Packaging maker Sealed Air adds solar to California plant

US packaging producer Sealed Air (NYSE:SEE) said today it has installed a 3.5-MW ground-mount solar array at its manufacturing facility in Madera, California in partnership with TotalEnergies SE (EPA:TTE).

The company invested USD 9 million (EUR 9.1m) in the solar farm, which is coupled with a 770-kW/3,080 kWh battery and is now powering the plant producing its BUBBLE WRAP brand packaging and other products. SEE partnered with TotalEnergies to design and install the project. The French energy group recently acquired the industrial and commercial solar operations of SunPower Corp (NASDAQ:SPWR).
